Listen!
What is it?
The wolf howls, the snow glitters, the black crow soars across the plain.
This is the world of the Snow Queen, enchanting, spellbound, deadly.
This is the world where an icy kiss can kill.
See the boy whose heart is cold as stone, trapped in an eternal puzzle.
Meet the frightful robber girl who wields her knife and teases with death,
but may not be what she seems.
Listen to the flowers reveal stories like riddles, and see the birds
and the deer dart on the wind.
Watch the girl journey to the ends of the earth to save her beloved friend.
Will she find who she is looking
for - or will she be snatched by the piercing cold?
Will a kiss of love melt into a new beginning?
Will the tears of a friend heal a soul?
Listen!
What is it?
Can you hear the sigh of the sunshine?
Come with us on a life-changing journey, which will make your teeth chatter, your soul tremble and your belief in the human spirit grow all the stronger. Meet the marching snow flake army, the wise old flowers who weave stories of gold. Fall for the beauty of the magnificent ruler and ache for the lost love of a brave little girl. Here is a challenging adventure full of good versus evil, of beauty and deception, of the simplicity and endurance of human love.
One of the strengths of Foursight Theatre which is so often commented on, is its ability to produce refreshing work that is grounded in confident choices. The Snow Queen presented wonderful casting opportunities, from exploring the personification of the heroine Gerda as black and female, to celebrating the genre of Pantomime and introducing the Snow Queen in drag. Such choices revelled in the unexpected and opened up this familiar story to new interpretation and life.
Through this project, Foursight celebrated their fifteenth year as a devising company with their first family show (age 7+), packed with magical energy, music and puppets. With an original score for voice and instruments by Jill Dowse (Six Dead Queens) and directed by Foursight's Artistic Director Naomi Cooke, this production was a wonderfully atmospheric evocation of the joy and sacrifice of human relationships.
With this project Foursight continued their drive to re-examine history through the eyes of female protagonists. Stylistically, The Snow Queen furthered Foursight's commitment to total theatre with a particular emphasis on extending work with visual artists, moving away from the idea of set and towards the concept of animated space.
The Snow Queen toured
from December 17th 2002 to February 15th 2003.
