FOURSIGHT THEATRE aim to provide a year round programme of workshops, lectures and residencies, which reveal and explain the FOURSIGHT method of work.

All our work is based on the FOURSIGHT method, which reflects the content and style of our shows. The work will promote the concept of Total Theatre:

- theatre which starts with the physical impulse to enable textual and character development
- theatre where the image is as important as the spoken word
- theatre which integrates the textual, musical, visual and physical aspects of performance.

Participants experience working in the FOURSIGHT method and gain an understanding of how the company creates its work, as well as finding and developing their own theatrical and creative skills. When leading a workshop or residency, FOURSIGHT will emphasise the following core values:

- a commitment to high quality work which is thought provoking and risk-taking creativity based on collective and non-hierarchical processes and structures
- a respect for the experience of individuals [both company members and participants] which encourages authenticity and integrity
- the importance of promoting individual creative expression and the importance of personal choice
- the empowerment of women both artistically and socially [though not at the exclusion of men].

A dedicated education workshop programme for schools accompanies our shows and national tours. For further information, please go to the relevant page on this website (current/past productions).

JUNIOR SCHOOLS THEATRE SKILLS PROJECT

Foursight Theatre is launching a new education project which is being offered to schools in the Black Country. The project involves a series of workshops using theatre skills as a tool to develop a sense of teamwork, to help children grow in confidence and build upon their self-esteem. Each project can be tailored to the individual school and focus on specific areas of the curriculum if desired.

The project was initially developed in association with William Brookes School, Much Wenlock as a link with its feeder schools. Following a very positive response from the schools involved in the first project, we are now offering these workshops to schools within the Black Country and Wolverhampton.

The workshops will run across a period of 5-6 weeks, with regular visits one morning or one afternoon each week. Through a variety of methods, the children will get to experience themselves, each other and the world around them in a way that is not always possible within the constraints of the curriculum or the classroom.

Teachers and class support, from the outset, will be encouraged to join in and hopefully use it as an opportunity to acquire new skills and further the work done in the drama sessions in their own activities with their class.

Pupils would be encouraged to use the sessions to explore new means of self-expression, with a strong emphasis on learning to work together, sensitivity to others, team building and confidence building.

Call either Frances Land or Emma Beale at the office for further details.

As part of its Education Policy, FOURSlGHT THEATRE also responds to targeted commissions and takes part in Artists in Residency programmes. Examples include commissions for Art Galleries, Schools, and Adult Education Outreach groups. Descriptions of previously commissioned shows are as follows:

Always at loggerheads with the local chartermaster, her story centers around her family who all work in the area, down the pits, on the pit bank or in the iron works. Strikes, weddings and funerals are all part of the rich tapestry of Gertie's life.

Key Stages Two & Three
Pigs Might Fly

Betty Pigs Might Fly is a funny, fast moving and gripping look at women's work during the Second World War.
The story spans five years of Betty's life. Betty, a Lancashire lass from Manchester joins the Women's Land Army to do her bit for the war, get away from home and begin a new life out in the open air, far away from the noise and grime of the more familiar northern factories. The story is based on research about the county at war and the fictional character Betty reflects the experiences of various women who were in the Land Army during the Second World War. From the jobs she does on farms, to her ingenuity towards war time rationing and her new and exciting social life, Betty takes us on a roller coaster journey through her different experiences and responses to a country at war.
The play is woven together with the intriguing development of her love for an Italian prisoner of war. Exploring themes of patriotism and xenophobia Betty is faced with the final dilemma of marrying Ricco against the approval of many, or, leaving Shropshire to return to a life in Manchester. The decision is left open for an optional after performance discussion.

Both plays are performed with a fusion song, monologue and physical storytelling techniques.

The Workshop
The performance will be followed by a one day workshop. Foursight have extensive experience in this area and will be able to adapt work to the needs of the groups .

Generally the workshop is designed to give pupils the experience of learning through drama and to clarify and develop their understanding of the plays. They will practically explore, characters and their dilemmas, whilst learning a varied range of Drama skills. The workshop will follow the outline below.
  1. Research of written and visual material (provided).
  2. Development of character through role play and hot seating.
  3. Improvisation using the characters created.
  4. Collective writing and scripting.
  5. Framing of work using physical theatre techniques.
